Shelves, mirrors and pictures

Fixed into the wall, not into the plaster

Floating shelves that stay level under load, heavy mirrors that stay where you put them, and picture walls set out before a single hole is drilled. The fixing depends entirely on what is behind the plaster, which is the part most people get wrong.

What it costs

A fixed price, agreed before we start

Send a photo of the wall and tell us roughly what is going on it. A tap on the wall in the photo tells us very little, so we check properly on the day and price for the wall we find.

The price depends on the wall more than the item. A solid wall is quick. Plasterboard or dot-and-dab needs a fixing that reaches something solid behind, which takes longer and costs more. We tell you which before we start.

Jobs round Oxfordshire

All of these are jobs we have actually done. No stock photographs.

A geometric mirror on a plasterboard wall. Heavy, awkward to balance, and dead centre on the wall rather than centred on the sofa, which is what the eye actually reads.

Worth knowing

Why the wall decides the price

✓ What we check first

  • What the wall is actually made of, before anything is drilled
  • Where the studs, pipes and cables run
  • Whether the fixings supplied with the item are up to the weight, which they often are not
  • How it should sit in the room rather than just on the wall

! The three walls, and what each needs

  • Solid brick or block takes any weight, with the right plug and screw
  • Plasterboard on studs carries nothing on its own. The screw has to reach the timber behind it
  • Dot-and-dab looks and sounds solid but has a gap behind it, so the fixing has to bridge the gap and grip the block
  • A floating shelf is the hardest of all, because the load hangs off the end of a concealed rod

If the job turns out to be different from the photos, we stop, tell you plainly what we have found, and you don't pay for work we haven't done.

How it works

Four steps, no surprises

  1. You send a photoThe wall, and the thing going on it. Tell us roughly how heavy it is.
  2. You get a fixed priceIn writing, with the wall type we are expecting. If it turns out different we stop and tell you.
  3. We fix itWall checked, position agreed with you, then drilled once and properly.
  4. We tidy upDust vacuumed as we drill, not after. Floor as we found it.

Something heavy waiting to go up?

Send a photo of the wall and the item. You will get a fixed price back, usually the same day.
